Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship | Reuniting Generations in Canada

One of the most emotional and meaningful family immigration pathways to Canada is the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship (PGP). This program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence, helping families stay united across generations.

Who Can Sponsor Their Parents or Grandparents?

To be eligible to sponsor, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Reside in Canada at the time of application
  • Meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirement for the last 3 consecutive years
  • Agree to a 20-year financial undertaking to support your sponsored family members

📌 Important: This program operates on a lottery system. Interested sponsors must first submit an “Interest to Sponsor” form, and only those selected through the draw will be invited to submit a full application.

Who Can Be Sponsored?

Eligible individuals include:

  • Biological or adoptive parents
  • Step-parents (if they are in an ongoing legal relationship with your biological parent)
  • Grandparents, from either side of the family

You may sponsor more than one parent or grandparent, provided you meet the eligibility and income requirements for the total number of family members.

Financial Responsibilities of a Sponsor

As a sponsor, you must commit to:

  • Supporting your parents or grandparents financially for 20 years from the date they become permanent residents
  • Ensuring they do not rely on social assistance, or you may be held liable for repayment

Minimum Necessary Income (MNI)

You must demonstrate that your income has met or exceeded the required MNI for the past 3 taxation years, based on your current family size plus the number of persons being sponsored.
📄 Acceptable proof includes Notice of Assessment documents issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Alternative Option: Super Visa

If you’re not selected in the annual draw, you can consider applying for a Super Visa for your parents or grandparents.
This is a
long-term, multiple-entry visitor visa valid for up to 10 years, allowing stays of up to 5 years at a time without applying for permanent residence.

📌 Note: Due to the program’s limited intake and competitive nature, professional preparation of your sponsorship application is key to success.
