🎓Study Permit from inside Canada | Change, Extend,or Convert ti a Study Permit

If you are currently in Canada and wish to pursue your studies at a designated learning institution (DLI), there are several options available to obtain, extend, or change the conditions of your Study Permit. These include converting a Visitor Visa to a Study Permit, extending your current permit, or changing its conditions. Below, we explain each pathway in detail:

1. Converting a Visitor Visa to a Study Permit (Visitor to Study Permit)

If you have entered Canada on a Visitor Visa and have decided to study, you may be eligible to apply for a Study Permit from inside Canada under certain conditions:

  • You have received an admission for primary or secondary school (grades 1–12), and intend to apply for a Study Permit. In this case, you can apply without leaving Canada, and the permit will be issued and mailed to you within the country.

  • You have been accepted to a college or university, but the admission is conditional (usually requiring completion of a language course). If you complete the prerequisite course within Canada before your visitor status expires, you can then apply for a Study Permit from inside Canada.

  • You are already studying with a valid permit in a preparatory or qualifying program, and your DLI is authorized to issue in-country admissions.

  • Other specific situations may also allow you to apply for a Study Permit from within Canada, depending on your circumstances.

Important: Applying for a Study Permit from within Canada usually has a higher approval rate compared to applying from outside. However, the process can be complex and many applicants make mistakes that result in rejection. Professional guidance is highly recommended.

2. Extending Your Study Permit from Within Canada

If your current Study Permit is about to expire but your studies are not yet complete, it is recommended to apply for an extension at least 30 days before the permit’s expiry. To extend your permit, you will typically need:

  • A proof of enrollment or confirmation of continued studies from your DLI.

  • Transcripts or academic progress reports.

  • Proof of financial support to continue studying and living in Canada.

Note: If you apply before your permit expires, you may legally remain in Canada under implied status until a decision is made.

3. Changing Conditions on Your Study Permit

You may wish to change the conditions of your Study Permit, such as switching programs, institutions, or adding work authorization. This can include:

  • Changing your Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

  • Changing your level or field of study.

  • Adding authorization to work during your studies (if it was not included previously).

Note: All changes must be reported via your IRCC online account. In some cases, a new Study Permit may be required.
